Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture toward Fans

The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.

“That was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”

Jones additionally emphasized that the gesture was entirely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the wrong digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”

League Context for Proprietor Fines

This is not the first time an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases include:

  • Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
  • Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate net worth of $16 billion, making the penalty manageable for the billionaire proprietor.

Recent Issues and Public Spotlight

The incident follows a contentious preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt star defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a streaming series that explored his influence in developing the Dallas franchise into the world’s most valuable athletic organization, despite its recent title shortcomings.

The league’s decision to fine Jones underscores its ongoing effort to maintain proper behavior among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their position or financial standing.
