“That was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
Jones additionally emphasized that the gesture was entirely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the wrong digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Context for Proprietor Fines
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
