Astronaut Shares Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the mission, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.
The company behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company launched by a well-known tech mogul.
