An individual profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the event.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be out of power by the end of January surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump declared on the weekend that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of the president's removal at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However the market's assessment had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and surged in the morning of the next day, pointing to a sharp shift in betting activity immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," commented a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other traders also profited significant sums from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Politicians are starting to take note.

A new rule presented on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the United States, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

This sector were examined under the last presidential term. However it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Insider trading is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
